HIKING IN MYANMAR
Myanmar offers some of the best hikes, treks, and walks in the world. There are superb hike and trek trails in Putao in the Himalayan north, particularly the snow-capped Hkakabo Razi, the highest peak in the country, and the easier Phon Kan Razi. There are captivating hill tribe trekking up the hills and mountains; in particular, in the Shan Plateau, Bagan and Mrauk U. The fantastic Mt. Popa and the busy but glorious and supposedly sacred cliff-top rock of Mt. Kyaiktiyo offer wonderful hiking adventures, too.
The Shan Plateau offers various hikes from day and multi day, walking from one village to another and interacting with many various ethnic groups around Inle Lake, Kalaw, and Pindaya as well as Hsipaw, Kengtung, and Nanshan. Another popular activity in Inle Lake is hiking. The lake is boarded by caves, hills, and mountains making it perfect for easy 1-day hikes. The best places to hike in the Inle Lake area are Kalaw, Koun Soun Taungbo Monastery, Ta-Eh Gu Cave and Nyaungshwe Pass.
Myanmar offers a multitude of hiking options to suit almost everyone’s tastes, preferences, and energy and skill levels. The best time for hiking in Myanmar is from November to March.
Here are some of the popular routes from an easy day hike to a more strenuous multi-day hike.
